Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, Leader of Hounslow Council, released the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that today we learnt of the passing of former Hounslow Council Labour Leader, Honorary Alderman Steve Curran MBE, after a long battle with cancer.

“This is a devastating loss for his loved ones, his colleagues who worked closely with him and the Hounslow community in which he took such pride. He had a sharp political mind, and when it came to redeveloping the borough he was a force of nature.

“Steve first became Councillor in 2010, serving in Cabinet before being elected Leader of Hounslow Council in 2014 where he served for 8 years. I think everyone can agree that his leadership and vision have changed the borough dramatically and for the better. Whether it be our Hounslow High Street Quarter or the incredible redevelopment of Brentford High Street, Steve certainly left his mark all across our borough to ensure this was a place for all of us to thrive and succeed.

“Having worked closely with Steve for a number of years, I have saw first hand his steadfast commitment to the residents and communities of Hounslow. As Leader of Hounslow Council, not only did he navigate the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, but he also oversaw 1,300 council homes being built for local residents and ensured local businesses could thrive in Hounslow. His achievements culminated in Hounslow Council winning “Council of the Year” in 2021 at the Local Government Chronicle Awards. Due to his immense contribution to Hounslow and Local Government, Steve was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) – an honour that truly reflects his eminent service.

“On a personal note, I will sincerely miss Steve, his support, his quick wit and genuinely caring, open and friendly approach – ever since we both first joined the Council in 2010, Steve was a true political mentor to me and all of our Hounslow Labour family.

“Our condolences go to Steve’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

“Steve was an avid supporter of Hounslow Community Foodbox, a local charity which provides emergency food, support and advice to people living in the London Borough of Hounslow, and his family have asked if donations can be sent to this charity in lieu of flowers.”
