Councillor for Heston West
Shantanu has lived in Hounslow all his life and in Heston West Ward for fifteen years. Educated at Heston Community School up to sixth form, Shantanu graduated from the University of Kent at Canterbury in Politics and International Relations and went on to complete his Graduate Diploma in Law from BPP University. Outside of his work as a Councillor, he currently works in the gem and precious stone industry.
Shantanu has always believed in equality of opportunity and supporting those in greatest need in society. Through his work in the ward as well as with Seema Malhotra MP, Shantanu has witnessed the devastating effect of Government austerity on those who are living in “in-work poverty” and having to make fundamental decisions on a daily basis about whether to heat their homes or feed their families. Whilst accepting of benefit reforms, he is a strong advocate against the Government’s enforced capability assessment regime which has only served to make destitute those who need the greatest amount of support.
Shantanu believes passionately in youth engagement and empowerment. During his sixth form year, Shantanu was elected as Member of Youth Parliament for Hounslow which helped him gain tools and techniques to engage with his peers and young people generally so that he can be a strong voice within the ward and Council on issues that really matter for young people and young families. He is a currently a governor at a primary school for children with special educational needs in the borough.
Shantanu believes that the voice of every individual in Heston West must be heard and represented within the Council and beyond and that every protection for those who need the greatest support must be always be offered.
